Finding Beauty in the Ordinary: Cultivating a Creative Home
I recently hopped off social media. Deleted it all from my phone. (You can read “What I Did While Off Social Media” here.)
But what I’d like to admit to you here is that before deleting it, my days felt full—mundane, ordinary. Once it was gone, I simply realized I had gotten lazy.
One thing I don’t want to be lazy about is actually living this beautiful life I’ve been given. When I fill my extra moments with a quick scroll, pulling myself out of reality little by little throughout the day, I start letting time pass me by. I stop noticing the things that make life beautiful.
As the house stirs awake and our rooster literally crows, I notice the sunlight beaming through the window. I notice the kids playfully engaging with each other as the day begins. It’s so easy to overlook the beauty in these everyday moments when life feels busy or repetitive—or when we so easily draw our attention away from the moments in front of us.
Creating a creative home isn’t really about décor or perfection—it’s about training your eyes to notice beauty in the ordinary.
Slow Down Enough to See
All it takes is paying attention. And if something is standing in your way, remove it.
Keeping social media off my phone has been key for me. It’s such an easy habit to fall back into, but this time feels different. God’s been working in my heart about this, and the desire to reinstall it is next to none. It’s easier now to pause in the middle of what I’m doing—to simply notice.
The folded laundry.
The smell of dinner.
Sweet little notes and crafts left behind by a child.
God is present in all the details, and we can reflect Him by noticing with gratitude.
If you stop right now, where do you see beauty in this very moment?
Make Space for Simplicity
I know this is easy for me to say—I’ve never been much of a “things” person. But if you are, that’s okay too. There’s still room for beauty.
Try intentionally clearing a small space—both physical and mental clutter—to make room for rest, imagination, and joy. Start small: a sacred corner, a reading nook, a vase of flowers from the yard, something that makes you breathe easier when you see it.
What corner of your home could you make more peaceful this week?
Bring Meaning into the Everyday
A creative home has layers. It’s the items you choose to bring in, the meals you make, the things you create, and the rhythms that tell your family’s story.
Simple ways to bring meaning:
- Display your child’s artwork or creations.
- Incorporate handmade touches—fresh bread, handwritten notes, natural decor.
- Start small traditions that remind your family home is a place of rest and recharging.
Creativity becomes worship when we fill our homes with love and purpose.
Let Your Home Tell Your Story
A creative home isn’t a Pinterest-perfect home. It’s one that reflects who you are and what you love.
One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I am a significance-seeker. My heart is to make things better and more meaningful—not just prettier. Stop following trends and worrying about aesthetics. Decorate and organize your home in a way that tells your family’s story.
What small change could make your home feel more “you”?
Gratitude as Creativity
Gratitude changes how we see everything. November is here—and while this month often centers on thankfulness, let’s challenge ourselves to carry grateful hearts far beyond it.
One of my favorite ways to practice this is by snapping a quick photo of an ordinary moment that feels special. Then I come back to reflect on it, express gratitude, and notice again how God’s fingerprints are everywhere.
A Closing Thought
Cultivating a creative home is less about what we have and more about how we see.
May your home be a place where beauty is noticed, creativity is welcomed, and love is felt in the smallest details.
Take a moment today to notice something beautiful right where you are—and if you feel inspired, share it with someone else. Gratitude and beauty grow when we give them away.
